Hello, fighters!

As some of you may already know from our latest vlog, we are hosting Vanguard events at the upcoming Campus Game Fest 2016 from 24th to 26th June 2016 at ITE College Central, here in Singapore.

We’ve been part of this event for a long time and with it being less than a week away, we are more than excited about the events we have planned for the participants, from new players to veterans of the game.

We, ourselves, are Vanguard players, so if the stuff we came up with sounds exciting to us, we’re most certain you guys will get a kick out of it, should you attend. Head on over to http://campusgamefest.org/ to learn more about what else is at the event, including eSports gaming, other card games, anime and Japanese culture events, and so on.

Cardight!! Vanguard Asian Championship 2016 (Singapore) – Event Coverage

1044357_1050301411693219_5642319125015355906_n

Hey there, everyone, how has it been going? Josephine here today with our coverage of the 2016 Asian Championship. Before we start, much thanks to Dempster for taking almost all the photographs for this article.

On the morning of the 2nd of April, an hour or two after the sun had long risen over the horizon, several of us had gathered at Suntec City Convention Center in preparation for this big day. And the very first thing that greeted us, as per every event, was the crowd.

DSC01075.JPG

A big crowd, scattered across the area near Hall 404.

DSC01083

Queueing for registration began about fifteen minutes before the appointed time as you can see from the time table above. The crowd, once divided, now gathered into two lines: one for Cardfight!! Vanguard, and the other for Weiss Schwarz.

DSC01081DSC01082

As you can see, the queue for Weiss Schwarz pales in comparison to Vanguard’s.

DSC01078.JPG

For us at Crossbone Vanguards, only Ben, John, JJ and myself took part in the main tournament (for Vanguard, of course!). One of the reasons why some of us were perhaps reluctant to join was due to the tournament being held in the G regulation format, which meant that only cards printed with the nation’s flag at the bottom right corner of the card, cards that had been reprinted as well as the Cray Elemental and Touken Ranbu clans could be used.

Let us not dawdle on about this for now and leave that to the after-thoughts.

Upon entering the hall, we were greeted with the familiar mass spread of tables and chairs set out for both competitions as well as places for non-competitors to hang out and play.

DSC01084

And as per usual, as we proceeded to find us a place to drop our anchors and bags, the booths set up by various shops caught our eyes. All of them already had their wares in full display for people flooding in to take a gander. Our good man Leon was one of them. I hope you found something you liked?

DSC01085DSC01087DSC01086

As soon as we plopped down onto the seats, it was time for some warm ups. There was still plenty of time before the tournament starts, and both John and Ben got right down to it. Just not against each other.

DSC01088.JPG

In the meantime, for those not participating, it was time for casual fights, idle chit chats and simply just chilling around.

Say cheese!

DSC01090

Don’t mind me looking a little zoned-out; it’s probably one of the after-effects of medication. And hey, Chrono is here with us too! He’s looking a bit grumpy because he was dragged out of bed extra early.

DSC01091

I’m sorry if the position of my hands there looks rather, well, awkward.

Well, here are some snippets of us during the tournament. Don’t mind if some of us happen to be looking rather unglamorous in some of these photographs; stones will be thrown at Dempster for that if any offence was taken.

DSC01095.JPG

DSC01098

DSC01105.JPG

We may not have had any friendly fire this time between us Crossbone members, but we managed to get a rather amusing match-up against Ben and my little sister. It would have been an interesting match to watch if she did not get terribly grade-stuck, however.

DSC01097.JPG

As the tournament was done as a five-round Swiss rather than double-elimination, we managed to fight a handful of fighters. However, not all of us stayed for all five rounds: JJ withdrew after his second fight and John his fourth. As my purpose for joining this tournament was for testing my deck, I stayed for five rounds and Ben had an extra round, totalling up to six.

And as the main tournament was still underway, Leon and the rest had another plan in mind: to participate in the special rules tournament!

DSC01100.JPG

The special rules tournament consisted of three rounds and was in the extreme format. For each round, there were two special rules that either made or broke the game, chosen from a list via dice roll.

In accordance to Dempster, the special rules for each round are as follows:

First round: All units gain the “Resist” skill and each unit gets an extra drive check. That would mean that grade threes would have triple drive and all stride units quadruple drive.

Second round: All fighters have to play with their decks face up (but decks are shuffled face down) and they begin with four cards in their damage zone. Anyone who reaches ten damage points loses.

Third round: All units can only attack once (per turn) and everyone starts with a grade three as their first vanguard and one face-up unit in their G-zone. In addition, before each attack all fighters have to shout out “kyun-kyun attack!” or they would have to take one damage.

Indeed, it does seem interesting. Let’s see the gang in action.

DSC01107DSC01108DSC01109

Unfortunately I was not physically well enough to stay through the entire event, but from what I have heard, Dempster and JJ won all three of their match-ups, Leon two and I’m not too sure on how Jasmine and Brian fared. But it does seem that everyone had fun, so that is all that matters!

Afterthoughts

I believe this is the first time that G-regulation is being implemented in Singapore at a major tournament. As a result, there are mixed reactions from the community as to the restrictions that accompany the choice of this format. Allow me to summarise some of the points that some of us at Crossbones have discussed about in reflection of the tournament.

Naturally, with the limited choice of cards, one would see some common cards used for each clan. For example, I had the fortune of fighting against two Pale Moon decks, of which both focused on “Masked Magician, Harri”. Certain key cards remain almost the same, but there are several minor variations. However, some of us felt that Royal Paladin had an overwhelming advantage above the rest of the support for other clans in the G-era. This is particularly so due to several cards not needing restriction of the GB1 requirement to activate skills. Some examples named by John include “Starlight Violinist” and “Sage of Salvation, Benon” which allow for early field reinforcement.

In addition, while G-regulation supposedly balances out the meta and is intended to give the clans an equal footing, we still see a lot of Royal Paladin players making it to the top. In addition, there are fighters who resort to grade locking in order to delay a turn to be able to stride first. Indeed, with G-era decks, the first to stride has the upper hand, as that means being able to activate GB1 skills. However, looking it from another point of view supplied by JJ, it means that it also prevents combinations that are not restricted by Generation Break or by grade.

Getting grade-stuck and failing G-assist is something that leaves all of us bitter, and this is because it leaves us with lesser options to cope with the situation. It makes it worse when it happens to be your opponent’s lucky day and their triggers decide to show up earlier than you would love them to. Then again, Vanguard is a game that is very much based on luck compared to other card games, even if you do have skills to make up for the lack of it. With G-regulation, however, it would often be difficult to put those skills to the test.

Personally, I had the fortune once more in not facing any meta decks (which I presume is royal/shadow paladin or Kagerou decks), but even though I lost all but one of my fights I felt that I have learnt quite a bit yesterday. I would like to say that I am satisfied, but it reflects that I have much more to improve as a fighter.

And with all that needs to be said already out in the open, it is time to end this article. For those who attended the event, I hoped you had a good time and had lots of fun, just as we did.

Until next time, happy fighting!

Channel and Blog Update 26/8/2015

Hello everyone. I am za Captain here.

In this post, we would like to give everyone here a long awaited update in regards to our channel and blog. I really wanted to do a video on this for you guys regarding such a thing, but unfortunately that isn’t currently possible to do, without sacrificing the quality of videos that we have put out so far.

With that in mind, I would like to address the lack of updates on our Youtube channel, and there is a reason for that.

But before that, I would like to thank everyone of you who has subscribed to us on our channel and are checking us out here on our blog. Speaking for Dempster and Leon as well, we really appreciate you guys for doing that and providing the responses that you have done.

Now the reason why we haven’t been updating the channel stems from myself. Not long ago, I was a student studying for my degree in Film. With that came the privilege to book facilities, where we have been shooting our unboxing and fight videos. But now, I have recently graduated, so those privileges are gone. And we have been stuck in a limbo period, where we had no place to shoot our videos. That was why Dempster and Leon had done the unboxing videos by themselves for the Bermuda Triangle Clan Booster and the Touken Ranbu Title Booster.

But I am now happy to announce that we are coming back very soon, with the release of GBT04, officially coming out this Friday. We now have a new location to shoot our videos, thanks to the guys over at Dueller’s Point.

Dueller’s Point is a card shop/gaming haven located at Block 450 Hougang Avenue 10 #B1-541. While they are a Magic: The Gathering focused card shop, they also sell other card games like Cardfight Vanguard and Buddyfight, and they have a ton of board games available to play. If you live in Singapore, please pay them a visit. Or you can visit them at their website by clicking here.

Thanks to them, we will be able to return back to a more regular uploading schedule. We will have returning fight videos, some of which may be requested by you on our videos. If there is a match up you would like to see, feel free to leave it in the comments of our latest fight video. Also let us know if you would like us to do video editions of deck profiles. We currently have them here on our blog, but if you guys want them in video format, please let us know.

Now Dempster and I have been experimenting with some game capturing software, to prep ourselves for the release of Cardfight!! Online. If you would like to see what I have been doing lately, you can check my channel out here. I have been recording and uploading some Hearthstone fun, but I also have another game recorded that I will upload soon. Some game that is an RPG that’s related to a certain movie that’s coming out at the end of the year. *coughcough*

But going back on topic here. I have said a few times that we intend to cover the release of Cardfight!! Online when it comes out on Steam at the end of the year, and we will be giving it our full review. If the game turns out as we hoped it will be, the game capture software will come in handy when we start recording our matches. Perhaps with us versus you guys.

So there’s plenty to look forward to more in the near future, and we hope that you stick around for it. If you like our stuff, please tell your friends about us. Once again, do leave us a comment if there is something that you will like to see us do. Match ups, deck profiles. Anything related to Cardfight Vanguard. We hope that you will continue supporting us in doing what we enjoy most doing, which is to Stand Up, My Vanguard and have fun. 🙂

Thank you all and we’ll be back very soon. 🙂

Captain’s Log: CharaExpo 2015 – 20th June 2015

Hello everyone, this is your Captain speaking.

Welcome to my personal live blog post for CharaExpo 2015. 🙂

Just to give you guys a heads up on what you can expect to see from my posts, a fair warning that I much like to stay near the Vanguard fight area most of the time. I’m in it for the fun of the game, and as there is a Cardfight Vanguard Tournament happening at CharaExpo, I will definitely look to participating and proving the strength that is Raizer Power!!!!!

But that would make for a boring Live Blog, wouldn’t it? Hehe…

But seriously, I will be walking around the booths and try to be part of as many happenings as I possibly can make it for. One other thing I can confirm that I will be attending is the New Japan Pro Wrestling shows they will be performing. As a pro wrestling fan, this is pretty much as close to a house Show as I can attend, since my wallet forbids me to go to the Singapore Indoor Stadium on July 2nd. You know the one. 🙂

So yeah, a couple of things you guys can expect. I will update this blog post very frequently over the course of tomorrow, telling you of my movements and what I saw and liked and stuff. Not only will I be live blogging, I will be tweeting as well, so hit me up @IAmZaCaptain if you like.

And I won’t be the only one live blogging for the event. My friends, Dempster and Leon, will also have their own personal posts documenting their adventures in CharaExpo, and chances are we will all be blogging about different things. So give their posts a look too, alright?

So expect pictures, videos maybe, and a whole lot of (hopefully) awesome stuff to look forward to, that you will see right here from us at Crossbone Vanguards. 🙂

===Event Coverage Below===

9:30am: So here we are at Singapore Expo, waiting for the doors to open…

Leon is busy helping our friend Brian with his preperations. So me and Dempster are going to the opening now without them. Keep track here and with Dempster and Leon, here at Crossbone Vanguards.

9:37am: At the opening address of CharaExpo, giving their welcome address.

9:41am: CHARAEXPO IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!

9:48am: And the line is looooooooooooong!

9:51am: But we are funnelling in!
10:19am: Okay so, we’ve been in here for 20 mins now. Some shopping outta the way for me, including this!!  If there ever is a chance to chant “Botchamania!”, I am so in!!!

11:04am: Vanguard Stage just ended.  Hosted by Syuuta Morishima and featuring Tsubasa Yonaga, Izumi Kitta, Akira Itou, Masami Obari and Takaaki Kidani. They went in depth about voicing the characters Sendou Aichi and Tokura Misaki for the voice actors, unit and character designs for the artists and what the future of Vanguard holds from the President of Bushiroad.

Great insight from today’s guests.

Meanwhile, Leon is too busy doing this to update his post.

11:42am: Woo… Not even lunchtime and walking around the booths hard on me and on my wallet hehe.
Mitsuru P4 and Gold Vanguard Sleeve from one of the booths selling card game stuff, and new “United Sanctuary” Sleeve and Rubber Cardfight Vanguard G Play Mat from the Bushiroad Booth.

$7 + $10 + $12 + $30 = $59

Plus the $5 for later’s pro wrestling show, my total expenses is $64. Wow.

Time to kick ass in Vanguard and chew bubble gum…  And I can’t chew gum… 😀

1:47pm: Apologies for the radio silence. Fighting against my old build of a Royal Paladin Donation Build deck.

There’s still more fighting to be done! I’m not satisfied! XD

3:36pm: I’m now ringside for the NJPW show. Waiting for the show to start.

4:00pm: Here we go! NJPW Wrestling World!

5:34pm: The show ended more than half an hour ago, but the Wrestling World 2015 was great. I am happy that I attended.

There were many cool spots. So much so that I neglected photos and my post to report the action.

Now as the day is starting to wind down to end, I’m waiting for another fight hehe.

6:07pm: Okay so day is ending here at CharaExpo Day 1. Dempster, Leon and I will be consolidating our review of Day 1 CharaExpo Singapore and it will be up on the blog soon.

As such, if you have been following my exploits, thank you guys so much for joining me. And I hope that whatever I have put up has been good.

So the Captain will sign out here, you guys. 🙂

Captain’s Log: CharaExpo 2015 – 20th June 2015

News: WE’RE GOING TO CHARAEXPO SINGAPORE!!!

Okay so it isn’t the most exciting news to hear…

But Dempster, Leon and I will be going to CharaExpo Singapore Day 1, that’s happening on the 20th and 21st of June 2015 at the Singapore Expo, Hall 7 to cover the event.

xunnamed.jpg.pagespeed.ic.c7bKJyZ9Ey

But instead of us posting our impressions of the event at the end of the night or later, we are gonna be “Live Blogging” during the event itself.

Think of it as tweeting on Twitter, but essentially, the three of us will have a personal post each on this blog. And we will be updating these very posts to tell you guys where we are going to, what we have seen, what we like or don’t like after seeing, and stuff like that.

There will be photos, videos maybe, but you will definitely be able to follow us on our adventures through Hall 7, from the perspective of three different people who will mostly be seeing different things.

As this is an event coverage, we will go through as many things that CharaExpo has to offer, while keeping our focus mainly on Cardfight Vanguard related content.

So spread the word, pick between Team Captain, Team Dempster or Team Leon to follow and join us in the fun that is to come that is CharaExpo 2015.

Stand up, my Vanguard!
